ELLIOTT-LARSEN AMENDMENT
HB 4956 (2005)
We have no state or federal law prohibiting discrimination based upon
gender identity or expression or sexual orientation. The Elliott-Larsen
law written in the 70's protects us in these categories: race,
religion, national origin, color, marital status, height and weight,
sex, and age. LCERA promotes adding gender and sexual orientation as
protected classes to this state law.
State Representative Chris Kolb has sponsored an amendment to the
30-year-old Elliott-Larsen law to add gender expression and identity
and sexual orientation as protected classes. It was referred on June
16, 2005 to the Committee on Government Operations. It is not yet
scheduled for a vote in the State House.
As of this date, John Gleason (D) is co-sponsoring the bill - he
represents the Flint area. John Stahl (R - Lapeer - District 82)
has not come out in support of this much needed amendment. You can
